Bulgaria, Romania to Cooperate
in Environmental and Biodiversity
Protection

Bucharest, May 21 (BTA) - Bulgaria's Environment and Water Minister Neno Dimov and Romania's Vice Prime Minister and Environment Minister Gratiela Gavrilescu and Waters and Forests Minister Ioan Denes Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the protection of water, air quality and biodiversity between their ministries.

The Memorandum sets the areas of cooperation with a view to mitigating pollution and ensuring environmental sustainability. As regards water, Bulgaria and Romania will coordinate the implementation of cross-border measures under their Marine Strategies concerning marine waste and improving the marine environment, as well as control of plastic and microplastic pollution, mainly in the common stretch of the River Danube and the two countries' Black Sea zones.

Regarding biodiversity, the document focuses on coordinated wetland protection and management, protection and restoration of viable sturgeon populations in the lower reaches of the Danube and in the Northwestern Black Sea, and exchange of best practices in the management of Natura 2000 cross-border sites.

The Memorandum envisages cooperation in the mitigation of air pollution caused by imported used cars. LI/DD
