The documentary exhibition "The Jews in Bulgarian Lands" was opened in Podgorica on January 29 on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Bulgarian Embassy in Montenegro reported on its Facebook page.
Bulgarian Ambassador to Montenegro Stefan Dimitrov spoke at the opening of the exhibition containing documentary evidence of the life of the Jewish community from the collections of the National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methoduis”. He also presented a documentary film about the history of the Jewish community in Bulgaria.
In his address to the guests, Dimitrov presented the historical facts surrounding the rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during World War II and stressed that this act was the result of the massive resistance of Bulgarian society against the planned deportation of Bulgarian Jews to the death camps, as a result of which not a single Bulgarian Jew was deported or killed in Bulgaria because of religion or ethnicity.
The programme continued with the screening of the feature film Bulgarian Rhapsody directed by Ivan Nichev, which marked the beginning of the Month of Bulgarian Cinema in Montenegro. During this period three Bulgarian films (Bulgarian Rhapsody, Wingless, and Chalga) will be shown to the Montenegrin audience in Podgorica, Bar, Bijelo Polje and Mojkovac.
The presentation of the exhibition and the film screening at the Montenegrin Film Library was attended by more than 50 people, including the ambassadors of Italy, Slovenia, Ukraine, the deputy heads of the embassies of the United States, the United Kingdom, North Macedonia and the Delegation of the European Union, the president of the Jewish community in Montenegro, representatives of Montenegrin institutions, cultural and business circles, and the NGO sector.
