March 1 (BTA) - During a high-level video conference of EU tourism ministers during the Portuguese presidency, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Mariyana Nikolova said that Bulgaria support the establishment of green lanes for vaccinated people and people who have already recovered from COVID -19, while not restricting the travel of other travelers, said on Monday the Ministry of Tourism.

Minister Nikolova said during the forum that safe, trouble-free and free travel, as well as open borders are essential for revitalizing the tourism sector, which is why coordination, support and solidarity are needed, both at EU level and at a national level in order to create the necessary conditions to promote development in the sector in accordance with the fundamental right of free movement.

She said that it is necessary to develop a comprehensive European strategy for the development of the tourist sector in accordance with the objectives of Article 195 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. Special financial opportunities and support from the European Tourism Fund should be provided to create a favorable environment for tourist businesses, Nikolova added.

She said further that the most distinct trends in Bulgarian tourism during the pandemic has been a surge in domestic tourism, a shift to alternative safer means of transportation, increased interest in spa, wellness and medical tourism, as well as an interest in small-scale resorts and accommodation options.
