March 23 (BTA) - Tatyana Lolova, one of Bulgaria's most popular actresses, died on March 22 at age 87, the Union of Bulgarian Actors reported. According to Sofia's Pirogov Emergency Hospital, Lolova died from cerebrovascular disease. She had checked into the hospital with coronavirus infection on March 6. The infection was soon tackled successfully. The cerebrovascular disease and age-related changes in the circulatory and respiratory systems were the direct cause of her death.

With her many cinema, TV and theatre roles, Tatyana Lolova has been a household name in Bulgaria for decades. She was born in Sofia on February 10, 1934. Her talent as a comedian showed already in her first year as a student at the Higher Institute of Theatre and Film Arts (today's National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts) in Sofia. She was one of the founders of the newly established Theatre of Satire and became its first employee on December 26, 1956.

Lolova played regularly in the Theatre of Satire until 1978, where she won the hearts of the audience with her performances as a comedian. She appeared in over 40 roles there. Then, she moved to Sofia Theatre, where she developed mainly as a dramatic actress. Her popularity was hugely augmented by her cinema and TV roles. Lolova has many awards and other distinctions on her record, honouring her remarkable contribution to Bulgarian culture.

Her autobiography "1/2 of Life" was published in 1997 and was re-issued six times, the last time in 2012.

Offering his condolences on Lolova's demise, President Rumen Radev said: "Tatyana Lolova was an era in Bulgarian theatre and cinema that can never be replaced. She will forever remain a bright spiritual light in our national culture and memory."

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Culture Minister Boil Banov and National Assembly Culture and Media Committee Chairman Vezhdi Rashidov also expressed their condolences. RI/VE
