Probe to Look
into Possible Illicit
Prison Staff Trade Union Spending

Sofia, May 20 (BTA) - A check is launched following an alert about illicit spending of financial resources of the trade union of prison staff in Bulgaria. The probe is the reason for the suspension from work of the trade union's head, Ivaylo Grigorov, says a statement released to the media by the trade union on Thursday. According to the trade union, Grigorov cannot represent the members' interests.

An extended commission will shed light on all circumstances around the information provided in the alert. The present situation is unprecedented given the values and ideals followed, and is incompatible with the flawless reputation the trade union has built in the last 12 years, the statement reads.

The check at the trade union begins only days after caretaker Justice Minister Yanaki Stoilov announced on Tuesday that the activity of prisons and pretrial detention facilities from 2017 to present is being probed, in response to claims of businessman Svetoslav Ilchovski about the existence of a video of an inmate being assaulted.

In early May, Ilchovski, a large landowner and grain producer, told the parliamentary ad hoc committee scrutinizing the GERB incumbency that businessman Minyu Staykov and other detainees had been abused while in custody.
