site.btaSeventeen Bulgarians Rank Among World's Top 1% Scientists

November 19 (BTA) - Seventeen Bulgarian scientists have been named in the world's top 1 per cent, featuring in a Stanford University's ranking. Caretaker Education and Science Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov and his deputy Acad. Konstantin Hadjiivanov, both members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, are among them, the Education Ministry said here on Thursday in a press release.

The list includes more than 9 million researchers from all over the world, working in various fields, who have publications in prestigious international journals covered in SCOPUS, which is the largest database of peer-reviewed literature.

Another 55 Bulgarian scientists have been named in the world's top 2 per cent, most of whom work at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (41). The rest of the researchers work at Sofia University (11), University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (5) and Medical University Sofia (4).

Stanford University also published an annual ranking of the most influential scientists in 2020. A total of 48 Bulgarian researchers have been listed in the top 2 per cent, 19 of whom have been named in the top 1 per cent, the Education Ministry reported.

Scientists are classified in 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. The ranking is compiled based on a complex analysis which includes data about the number of citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index and citations to papers in different authorship positions. RY/KK
