Wanted Uzbek Man Arrested in Bourgas
Bourgas, on the Black Sea, September 13 (BTA) - An Uzbek man who
is on an international wanted persons' list was arrested at
Bourgas Airport on the Bulgarian coast upon arriving on a flight
from Hannover, Germany, the Bourgas District Court said on
Saturday.
Robert Batyrshin is being investigated for gross bribery and on
conviction he may face between 10 and 30 years' imprisonment.
After landing in Bourgas, he was taken into 30-day custody.
The General Public Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan launched a
search for Batyrshin in 2006. The Bourgas court said he is not
permanently residing in Bulgaria and his visit here is
accidental. The Uzbek authorities confirmed that he is wanted
and should be detained.
Batyrshin told the Bourgas District Court that he has lived in
Germany for 15 years, that he works there and is registered with
the Embassy of Uzbekistan. He said he knew that he was being
investigated but the Uzbek judicial authorities were not looking
for him. He insisted that he did not intend to abscond and
asked not to be held in custody.
The decision on Batyrshin's custody is appealable before the
Appellate Court in Bourgas. An appellate review is scheduled for
September 18. SN/VE
