Bulgaria Participates in Debate on Opportunities to Limit Veto Use
in UN Security Council

Sofia, New York, September 26 (BTA) - Bulgaria believes there
are grounds to consider the issue of the expediency of imposing
a veto at the UN Security Council in the case of genocide, war
crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, Foreign
Minister Daniel Mitov said, addressing a Ministerial Side-Event
dedicated to the problem of limiting the use of veto in the UN
Security Council, Mitov's Ministry said on Friday. The forum was
held on Thursday, during the 69th Session of the UN General
Assembly.

The ministerial was organized one year after French President
Francois Hollande made a proposal that the permanent members of
the Security Council voluntarily refrain from using a veto in
cases of mass violation of human rights in a certain state. This
initiative is supported by a considerable portion of UN Member
States, with over 70 countries being represented at high level
at the meeting, including all permanent members of the Security
Council.

The representatives of the participating states declared joint
support for the objective of the initiative: to build confidence
in the Security Council as a body which, according to the UN
Charter, bears the main responsibility for maintaining
international peace and security. PK/BR
