President:
'Today's European Council
Is Historic and Strategic'

Brussels, October 23 (BTA Correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) -
"Today's European Council is historic and strategic because we
will approve the new European Commission, which will take office
in time, with a clear bid in terms of priorities, efficiency
and usefulness for each of the EU countries. It is strategic
because we look ahead to 2030 and set a very ambitious programme
of change in each of the states for the establishment of a more
efficient economy, much clearer priorities in the energy sector
and specific and measurable indicators," Bulgarian President
Rosen Plevneliev told Bulgarian journalists in Brussels on
Thursday. He arrived here for a two-day European Council that
will be held with the participation of the EU heads of state and
government.

Talking about the upcoming discussions of the environmental
issues, the greenhouse gas allowances and renewable energy, the
President said the following: "Bulgaria is quite ahead in
regards to some of the parameters and I hope it will show
sufficient ambition to achieve the targets by 2030."

The energy issue will be discussed in-depth because the question
is - among other things - about Bulgaria's strategic interests,
including the setting of goals for gas and energy
interconnections and energy efficiency, the President noted. It
is high time that Bulgaria launches ambitious national projects
in this area, he added. "I am convinced that the goals, which
will be set today, are feasible, reasonable and strategic," the
head of State concluded. /PK/TK/
