Bulgarian, Macedonian Historians Participate in First Open Scholarly Discussion of Important Events on the Balkans

Skopje, July 25 (BTA) - For the first time Bulgarian and
Macedonian historians joined one and the same table during a
scientific conference to have an open scholarly discussion of
important events that took place on the Balkan Peninsula,
Macedonian media said late on Friday evening.

The forum took place in Bitola, organized by the two countriesТ
academies of sciences at the initiative of Chairman of the
Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Stefan Vodenicharov. The
organizers described the event as an incentive to an open
scholarly communication on any matter.

Chairman of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences Vlado Kambovski
said, quoted by the Macedonian Telma TV, that the time has come
when historiography sets itself free from ideological and
political bias so that scholars can discuss openly any matter,
without having to reach a common view at any cost.

Vodenicharov said that together the people of Bulgarian and
Macedonia pay tribute to all great heroes who 112 years ago
sacrificed their lives in the fight against the tyranny that had
tortured the two countries. "With the present meeting in Bitola
we want to show the future generations that these lands were
inhabited by mighty and brave people who wanted to live in
dignity," he said.

Twelve research works were presented at the scientific
conference, entitled, "MacedoniaТs Liberation Wars from the
Eastern Crisis until the Balkan Wars". The two academies of
sciences have so far implemented 33 joint research projects and
pledged to strengthen further their cooperation in the future.
