Shoumen Prosecutor Penev Detained for Implementation of Prison Sentence

Sofia, July 29 (BTA) - Prosecutor Roumen Penev from the Regional Prosecuting Magistracy in Shoumen, Northeastern Bulgaria, was detained on Tuesday evening and is to be escorted to the prison in Lovech, Northern Bulgaria, where he is to serve a three-year sentence for trading in influence.

In October 2011 Penev demanded 25,000 leva from a lawyer so as not to press charges and terminate a pre-trial procedure monitored thereby. He got 21,000 leva which were in marked notes, in January 2012. Penev was subsequently found guilty of trading in influence.

Penev is to serve his sentence in a open prison facility.
