Parliament Elects New Chairperson of  Committee for Protection of  Competition

Sofia, June 29 (BTA) - Parliament elected Wednesday a new chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of Competition (CPC). Julia Nenkova got the job after a 137-1 vote, with 10 abstentions. She was nominated by the ruling GERB party.

The MPs also elected Dimiter Kyumyurdjiev (a Patriotic Front nominee) to be her deputy.

Both of them have degrees in law.

Five commissioners were picked from among nine candidates to fill this important anti-trust regulator: Anna Yaneva (a Socialist party nominee), Georgitsa Stoyanova (GERB), Krassimir Vitanov (Reformist Bloc), Krassimir Zafirov (BDC-Popular Union) and Prof. Plamen Kirov (Movement for Rights and Freedoms).

Georgi Ganev who was nominated by the Centre for Liberal Strategies and was the only nomination of the non-government sector, turned out unacceptable for the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and the Reformist Bloc. Martin Dimitrov MP (Reformist Bloc) argued that he is unlikely to get strong enough support to be an efficient committee member and Chetin Kazak MP (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) questioned the presumed independence of a representative of the NGO sector because non-profits are always supported financially by somebody.
