Number of Children Registered with Child Pedagogic Units Decreases by 5.2 Per Cent in 2016 Year-on-Year - Statistics

Sofia, April 20 (BTA) - In 2016, 9,096 minors and underage children were registered with child pedagogic units (CPU) for anti-social behaviour and crimes, which is 500 less (5.2 per cent) children compared to the figure for 2015, the National Statistical Institute said on Thursday.

The ratio of CPU registered children in 2016 was 1,404 per 100,000 of average annual population between 8 and 17 years of age, down 6.6 per cent compared to the figure for 2015.

The number of newly registered children in 2016 totalled 3,054, 7.2 per cent up the 2015 figure.

The greatest share of anti-social conduct of CPU registered children, 27 per cent (1,554 cases) was escaping the care home, the specialized institution or a residential social service.

In 2016 the number of CPU registered children for crimes totaled 4,980, 7.1 per cent lower than in the previous year. Theft was the most common crime perpetrated by children between 8 and 17 years of age.

In 2016, 1,754 children became victims of crimes, of whom 674 (38.4 per cent) were girls. Minors victims of crimes were 653 (37.2 per cent), and underage children, 1,101 (62.8 per cent). Most of these children were victims of theft crimes, 849 (48.4 per cent). Children victims of rape (attempted and completed) were 21.

In 2016 the Local Commissions for Juvenile Delinquency instituted 5,351 cases and introduced 7,495 measures in respect of 5,567 children between 8 and 17 years of age, for the 6,106 anti-social acts done by them.
