Sofia, September 9 (BTA) - On Saturday, the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) solemnly marked September 9, the day in which back in 1944 the communist-dominated Fatherland Front took the power in Bulgaria and imposed a Socialist governance. The Bulgarians are divided over determining this historical event as a Socialist revolution or a bloody coup d'etat. So, traditionally, September 9 gives an occasion for celebration and nostalgia for some, while for others it is symbolic of atrocities and death camps created  by the then totalitarian state.

BSP leader Kornelia Ninova visited Straldja and Elhovo, Yambol Region, Southeastern Bulgaria. In Sofia, Socialist MPs laid flowers to the Monument of the Unknown Warrior. A rally was held later in the day at the Brothers' Mould in the Boris Garden.

"September 9th is a date having changed Bulgaria," said Ninova quoted by the BSP Press Centre. A modern society may not develop through hatred but based on the truth, she added.

Ninova underscored that for years certain people have been alleging that there was no fascism and, therefore, no antifascists while the then antifascists were "vagabonds, terrorists and violent murderers". She added that the assessment of the years after September 9, 1944 was also contradictory. "Therefore, we are here today not to hate but to remember and honour those who had a different ideal for a different future and would die for it as well as the Russian soldiers who gave their lives for Bulgaria," she noted.
