site.btaNo Deviations in Quality of Drinking Water according to Report of Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee

Sofia, October 25 (BTA) - Parliament Wednesday approved a report of the ad hoc parliamentary committee of inquiry set up in late April to look into cases of elevated uranium content and alpha activity in drinking water in Bulgaria detected in several places in the country. The report quotes the categorical opinion of the health authorities, the managers of the water supply and sewerage utilities in the affected places and the mayors that following the measures that were undertaken, there are no instances of water supplied to the end consumer with deviations from the quality requirements for health-significant radiological values, nor such posing actual or potential hazard for the human health.

The report also says in that individual areas of the country deviations from the drinking water standards occur more frequently, with periodical temporary of lasting increases in some of the values. Measures have been undertaken to address the issue, and an interdepartmental working group has been set up comprising representatives of the ministries of environment and water, of health, and of regional development and public works.

The report recommends to make the working group permanent, and to ask it to report before Parliament every six months.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee Georgi Kolev of the United Patriots said that there are no drinking water sources that are not according to standard.
