site.bta191 Kilos of Heroin Detained at Bulgarian-Turkish Border Checkpoint

Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, Southern Bulgaria, May 25 (BTA) - A record-big haul of heroin for the past year - 191 kilos, was detained on May 23 at this border checkpoint, it was announced at a joint briefing Friday of the head of the National Customs Agency Georgi Kostov, Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Mladen Marinov, and Haskovo, Southern Bulgaria, Deputy District Prosecutor Darina Slavova.

The drug was found in an incoming truck with Turkish number plates driven by a 61-year-old Turkish national. The truck was carrying ceramic adhesive from Turkey to Belgium. The heroin was detected by a drug-sniffing dog named Richie.

The drug, hidden in 95 factory sealed bags of the ceramic adhesive, is estimated at 12.415 million leva.

An investigation is underway. The Turkish driver of the truck was detained for 48 hours.
