Low-emission zones will be reintroduced in Sofia as a measure against air pollution from December 1, Sofia's Deputy Mayor for Ecology Nadezhda Bobcheva said on Thursday.

She recalled that the decision was adopted by the previous Municipal Council to reduce the impact of car traffic on air quality. The regulation will be in force between December 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025.  "The difference this time around is that not just Euro 1 cars, but Euro 2 cars will also be banned in the small ring," Bobcheva said.

The replacement of wood-burning stoves is another measure for cleaner air in the capital. According to Bobcheva, 2,000 households have replaced their stoves, meaning that 2,000 chimneys will not be polluting the air this winter.

Metropolitan Inspectorate Director Nikolay Nedelkov said air pollution inspections have doubled from last year. Deputy Mayor Iliyan Pavlov, who is in charge of transport, added that about 90,000 new passengers were registered in public transportation in 2024.
