The Yambol Municipality will apply to the European Green Cities Awards competition with its linear park in the grassy empty arm of the Tundzha River, said the Municipal Council in Yambol following its Thursday meeting.

The awards are presented as part of the 2021-2023 Green Cities Europe programme, which focuses on the importance of green open spaces in an urban environment. The competition promotes successful and innovative green infrastructure projects. The initiative is organized by the European Nurserystock Association (ENA).

The river arm has been dried up for decades and has a backup function at high water levels. The empty trough was turned into a linear park with a length of nearly 2.5 km a few years ago. Clearing and work on the area began at the end of 2019 with the removal of lush vegetation and tonnes of household waste, BTA recalls.
