Sofia, December 20 (BTA) - For the first time in nearly two decades Sofia Zoo will house a pair of black vultures. The official "introduction" of the two birds named Sofia and Badajoz (Badajoz is the largest town in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain) will take place on December 22, said the NGO Green Balkans.
The vultures have permanent disabilities, which makes it impossible to release them in the wild. The Green Balkans specialists are hopeful that the new birds would be able to have offspring in their new home.
The vultures were donated to the zoo by the Extremadura Government as part of the Bright Future for the Black Vulture project, which is a joint initiative carried by organizations from four different countries. The decision to donate to Sofia Zoo was made by Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna and aims to reintroduce the black vulture population in the Bulgarian wild.
Black vultures are emblematic to Sofia Zoo, because it was gifted one bird by the Bulgarian monarch Tsar Ferdinand I more than 100 years ago. This makes the species the first to ever be a part of the Sofia Zoo collection, said Green Balkans. The black vulture is categorized as Extinct in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria.
