Seven hectares in the village of Albota de Jos, Taraclia District, have been planted with trees. The afforestation took place within a national campaign, entitled “The Tree of Our Longevity”.

„A total of 30,000 saplings will be planted,” Gennady Tulus of the local agricultural service told BTA. The saplings have been supplied by the Moldsilva state agency. Nearly 300 people took part in the tree planting - from the local administration, staff of the Gregory Tsamblak Taraclia University, students, and members of the public.

The afforestation campaign in the whole of Moldova began on October 26 and will continue until the end of November. According to the agriculture minister Georgeta Mincu within the campaign some 530 hectares will be afforested. Another 3,000 hectares of forests will be recultivated. The afforestation day “The Tree of Our Longevity” was established in 1995 by a presidential decree and takes place on the last Saturday of October.

The tree cover rate in Moldova is 12% and in Taraclia District – 6%. According to European standards 27% of a country’s territory should be covered by trees.
