On October 3, Sofia University will be hosting a seminar on Science in Antarctica and Bulgaria-Spain cooperation in this field, said the Spanish Embassy in Sofia.  

It aims to present the origin, development and current status of 30-year-old bilateral cooperation in scientific and logistical matters in Antarctica. It will also explain what scientists do in Antarctica and why research in this area is of vital importance for the better management of the environmental challenges facing our planet, said the Embassy in its announcement of the event.

The seminar will be opened by Spanish Ambassador Miguel Alonso Berrio and the Vice Rector of Sofia University, Toni Spassov. The Technical Secretary of the Spanish Polar Committee, Antonio Quesada, and Director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof. Christo Pimpirev, will tell the participants about Spanish-Bulgarian cooperation in Antarctica. Antonio Quesada will also brief them on the priorities in Spanish research in Antarctica, its impact and application in society of the knowledge acquired: from climate change to the development of energy solutions. Then Rositsa Yaneva, Coordinator of the Bulgarian program at the National Polar Research Center, will brief the audience on Bulgarian research in Antarctica. 

The Head of logistics of the Spanish program and member of the CSIC Marine Technology Unit, Miguel Ángel Ojeda; and Head of Logistics of the Bulgarian Program and Deputy Director of the National Polar Research Center, Dragomir Mateev, will share information about research in extreme conditions.

FInally, Spanish scientist and writer Javier Cacho will talk about science in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration (1898-1922).
