site.btaAntarctica Day Marked with Exhibition of Photos from Bulgarian Antarctic Expeditions in Burgas

An exhibition with photos by various participants in Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions was unveiled at the NHK Cultural Centre in Burgas on Friday on the occasion of Antarctica Day, December 1. Until December 10, visitors can see 20 photographs made by Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, Iglika Trifonova, Petko Ginev, Alexander Nedyalkov, Kamen Nedkov, Viktor Troyanov, Oleg Vasilev, and Nedyalko Hasuzbasanov.

The exhibition is organized by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the Burgas branch of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, with the assistance of Burgas Municipality.

Antarctica Day has been marked internationally since 2010 to commemorate the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in Washington on December 1, 1959. Under the Treaty, Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only, and freedom of scientific investigation there and cooperation toward that end shall continue. The total number of Parties to the Treaty is now 56, including Bulgaria.

Antarctica Day was initiated by the Foundation for Good Governance of International Spaces as an annual event showing how various peoples can work together for peace and constant use of science as an international language of cooperation in decision-making outside of national borders. Environmental protection is an obligation of the Parties to the Treaty, and good international cooperation is in everyone's interest, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute writes on its Facebook page.
