site.btaBrussels: Extra Safeguard Measures Will Be Put in Place against Ukrainian Agri-Food Imports if Necessary
A spokesperson for the European Commission said on Monday that if necessary extra safeguard measures will be put in place against Ukrainian agricultural imports. He said that the possible measures are still at issue.
The measures will be announced when they are ready.
The spokesperson said that the solutions for Ukraine always seek a balance between support for the country against the Russian aggression and taking into consideration the consequences for the European Union, including in the area of agriculture, he added.
European Commission figures on agricultural imports from Ukraine are constantly updated.
Days ago, the Commission said that it will propose trade measures this week, which will reflect to a large extent the concerns of farmers from several EU countries in relation to Ukrainian agricultural imports. This announcement was preceded by a joint letter by Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, which urged for the introduction of tariff-rate quotas for the larger part of Ukrainian agricultural imports.
