Several groups of drones attacked Odesa by sea on New Year's Eve. Loud explosions echoed round the Ukrainian city around 1 am. Telegram accounts reported that falling drone debris caused two multi-storey blocks to catch fire. The authorities are urging everyone to seek shelter.
According to initial information from the Odesa Telegram channels, five civilian areas were struck.
"There is one dead and eight people injured so far," Governor of Odesa region Oleh Kiper said on Telegram.
The Bulgarian community in the Odesa region is the third largest, numbering over 150,000 people, according to the official 2001 census in Ukraine. Between 50,000 and 60,000 Bulgarians reside in the city of Odesa. The most densely Bulgarian-populated areas are Bolhrad, Izmail, and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi.
