Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine comes as a reminder of the importance of peace and has brought home the fundamental idea about the EU as an antidote to war, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in a video message during the EU Meets the Balkans forum in Sofia on Tuesday.

The forum is organized for the second consecutive year by the European Liberal Forum, supported by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria.

According to Metsola, the EU has done a great job by standing with Ukraine.

She said security and stability in the region are key to stability in the EU. The Western Balkans have called for stepping up EU enlargement, a process which is believed to take too long, she commented.

"The world is changing, and so is the EU," Metsola noted. Among the bloc's latest achievements, she singled out the award of EU candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the introduction of visa-free regulations for Kosovars travelling to the Schengen area.

The European Parliament chief urged the Western Balkans to keep up their work to meet the EU enlargement criteria.
