Bulgaria’s Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, took part in NATO’s Military Committee Conference in Riga, Latvia, held on September 26-27, the Defence Ministry said in a press release on Sunday. Key topics on the agenda included the challenges posed by Russia’s actions, as well as the follow-up steps after the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague.
“In the face of growing security challenges, primarily stemming from Russia’s actions, we must maintain a high level of readiness and ensure the effective implementation of regional plans, particularly along the Eastern Flank,” Eftimov stressed during discussions on the Alliance’s planning package, with a focus on comprehensive support and enhanced vigilance activities in the region.
“Only by striking a balance between innovation and interoperability will we be able to meet the challenges of today’s security environment,” Eftimov told the forum.
The conference devoted special attention to the implementation of the Capability Targets 2025 in the context of NATO’s defence planning, the risks linked to the rapid adaptation of the defence industry, and the challenges of integrating new technologies. “The delivery of the new Capability Targets 2025 package is essential for ensuring the viability of our defence plans,” Eftimov underscored.
Participants also discussed proposals for drafting the Political Guidance 2027 document, as well as directions for updating NATO’s Military Strategy in its upcoming review.
On the sidelines of the conference, Eftimov held talks with several counterparts, including a bilateral meeting with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Admiral Pierre Vandier, where issues of mutual interest were discussed.
