Bulgarian MEP Stanislav Stoyanov (Europe of Sovereign Nations/Vazrazhdane) has submitted a claim to the European General Court in Luxembourg challenging the decision for Bulgaria to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, Vazrazhdane said in a press release on Tuesday.
Stoyanov, who chairs the Europe of Sovereign Nations party, calls for a revocation of the decision of the Council of the European Union on the euro changeover in Bulgaria, citing substantial procedural violations and abuse of authority allegedly committed in the course of making the decision.
“With this claim, I am defending not only the Bulgarian lev [the national currency] but also the rule of law in the European Union. The decision to introduce the euro in Bulgaria as of January 1, 2026, was made contrary to the EU Treaties, statistical regulations and convergence criteria. Such violations should not be overlooked,” Stoyanov argues.
On July 8, 2025, the Council of the European Union voted unanimously to adopt the final decisions for Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area on January 1, 2026. This followed a European Parliament approval, by a vast majority, of a report confirming that the country meets the euro area membership criteria.
