Nurgyul Salimova qualified for the semi-finals of the Women's World Chess Cup in Baku with a prize fund of USD 676,250.
She eliminated Russia's Polina Shuvalova 3-1 after scoring two victories in the playoff games of rapid chess - first on the 58th move with the white pieces, and then on the 40th with the black pieces.
This is the biggest success in the 20-year-old Salimova's career. She has a real chance to qualify for the world title contenders tournament, with a place secured for the top three chess players in the World Cup.
For a place in the final, Salimova will play against Ukraine's Anna Muzychuk.
