Minister of Electronic Governance Valentin Mundrov said the Ministry is actively developing electronic identification, while Bulgaria still needs to adapt its national systems to comply with the European Union’s requirement for all member states to implement a digital identification wallet (EUDI Wallet), the Ministry’s press service reported on Thursday. “We want to learn how Denmark is managing this process and how it aligns European standards with national solutions,” Mundrov said during a meeting in Copenhagen with Denmark’s Minister for Digital Affairs Caroline Stage Olsen.

During the talks, it was noted that Denmark is a European pioneer in electronic identification, having established the foundations for digital identity as early as 2000. Currently, 97% of citizens over 15 and all businesses use electronic identification tools to access public and private services. “Gaining practical knowledge and experience in electronic identification is essential for us,” Mundrov added.

Both sides agreed that Denmark would provide expertise to support Bulgaria’s electronic identification efforts. “National electronic identification is a government priority. It requires strong political will, effective coordination across all institutions, and ongoing dialogue with businesses to build an efficient and trusted digital system,” Mundrov said. He added that the system will enable citizens and businesses to access reliable and secure tools for electronic services, both national and European.

Cybersecurity and the protection of information systems were also key topics at the meeting. The two countries discussed ways to strengthen national infrastructures, improve incident response mechanisms, and share best practices in information security. Bulgaria and Denmark confirmed their commitment to closer cooperation in the field of cybersecurity.
