Opposition lawmakers from Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) slammed the government's fiscal approach following an International Monetary Fund (IMF) assessment that highlighted rising risks to Bulgaria’s economic stability. "We are at a critical juncture, and we will be the voice of reason on the right in this debate," said opposition MP Martin Dimitrov of Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) on Wednesday, speaking to journalists in the lobby of Parliament.
At a press conference in Sofia on Tuesday, the head of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Bulgaria, Fabian Bornhorst, emphasized the country’s need for stronger fiscal discipline, accelerated reforms, and careful management of euro adoption risks to ensure sustainable growth and avoid macro-financial imbalances.
"The IMF has confirmed our fears, the budget has been breached, the deficit is out of control," Dimitrov warned. “This Government has taken a dangerous leftward turn. You saw how quickly the power-holders agreed to increase social security contributions, and it sounds like even more hikes could be coming next year. That would be very bad news and a serious brake on Bulgaria’s development,” he emphasized.
Ivaylo Mirchev, the Co-chair of Yes, Bulgaria within the CC-DB, said that the coalition is proposing right-wing measures, reforms, and administrative streamlining, all without any tax increases.
