MEP Kristian Vigenin (S&D/BSP) Thursday told reporters he would stand for the chairmanship of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). "I have decided to join the discussion and the race for the BSP chairmanship," he said.

"I believe I have some good ideas about what can be done how," Vigenin said. He will set forth his ideas at meetings with Socialists in the coming weeks and hopes for a positive conversation on ways to change BSP and make it strong and effective.

"Of course, I hope to win, but however things unfold, the point is that we will have a real conversation," Vigenin said.

BSP will hold its 51st congress on February 15-16 as decided by its National Council. A direct election of the party's chairperson will be held on February 23.

On September 1, 2024, the National Council voted to expel former BSP leader Korneliya Ninova from the party. On September 9, the Supreme Court of Cassation confirmed a Sofia City Court ruling of July 10 that strikes off Ninova as BSP leader and representative of the party and lists Atanas Zafirov as acting leader.
