site.btaBurgas Municipalities Unite to Fund Year-Round Flights for Burgas Airport

All municipalities in the Burgas region will unite in a non-profit association, which aims to finance a new fund to stimulate year-round flights from and to Burgas Airport, said the press center of Burgas Municipality after a work meeting with all thirteen municipality mayors in the region on Tuesday.

Participants in the meeting also included Frank Kvante, CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, which is the concessionaire company of Burgas Airport and the chairs of municipal councils, as well as non-governmental organisations. The municipal councils will vote on the participation in the association until the end of March 2024, and the founding meeting of the association will be held in April, the press center said. It is expected that the association will be chaired by Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov. 

The negotiations with the airlines will be conducted by the municipalities together with Fraport, and their contribution to the association will be according to the number of residents registered with a permanent address. The participation of Fraport in the fund will be BGN 200,000 per year. Talks with the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Transport are pending, as well as the participation of the state in the association, said Burgas Municipality after the meeting. 

The funds of the association will be used for additional financing of flights outside the active summer season. Talks have already been held with the Bulgarian airline Gulliver for the provision of regular daily flights between Burgas and Sofia, as well as flights between Burgas and Istanbul. Meetings with Turkish Airlines on the subject are also forthcoming, as this will enable direct connections with the whole world, noted the municipal press center.
