Bulgarian Dental Association (BDA) head Nikolai Sharkov was elected FDI World Dental Federation President Elect at the FDI World Dental Congress 2023 in Sydney, Australia, BDA Secretary General Borislav Milanov told BTA on Wednesday. Sharkov got the support of 66% of the session's members (97 votes) to become the first Bulgarian on this post, Milanov noted. 

Until now, Sharkov was FDI World World Dental Federation Treasurer. His success is the result of long years of work by many people, including his colleagues at the BDA, Milanov said.

The World Dental Federation President Elect has a two-year term in office. As President Elect, Sharkov will take office in two years. Until then, he will work side by side with the current president, Milanov explained.

FDI World Dental Federation encompasses representatives of branch dental organizations from more than 147 countries. It was established in the late 19th century and has since been working in the field of dental health policy. Bulgaria joined the organization in 2003. "In these 20 years, we have proven through our work, despite being a small country, that we have the resource and can be trusted," Milanov said.
