The 35th academic year at Burgas Free University (BFU) was officially opened with a ceremony here on Monday. Among the official guests at the event were representatives of the board of trustees, lecturers, students, public figures, and partners of the university.
Vice-Rector Prof. Mariya Alexieva opened the ceremony with a welcome address to the first-year students, calling them “the most important guests of the day.” She wished the students to start this new chapter in their lives with hope, smiles, and faith, and to seek new knowledge and horizons together.
BFU Rector Prof. Milen Baltov welcomed the students and faculty with wishes for a healthy and inspiring year. He pointed out that the university is entering its 35th year since its establishment and that “its maturity gives it the confidence and responsibility to be among the factors for regional development and to contribute to national and international issues.”
Prof. Baltov said that during this academic year, BSU together with 12 other universities from the European Union is launching an exchange programme as a European University of Islands, Ports and Coastal Territories. He added that under the Erasmus+ programme, students will have the opportunity to study one term abroad, while others will gain experience even before graduation through student internships and placements with the university's business partners.
The ceremony ended with a wish from the management for a successful, peaceful, and inspiring academic year.
In the 2024/2025 academic year, 16,995 foreign students, including from EU Member States, enrolled in Bulgarian universities. The largest number of international students came from Greece (3,277), the United Kingdom (2,235), Ukraine (2,151), Germany (1,532) and Italy (990). A growing number of international students and doctoral candidates, including from Western Europe, are choosing to study in Bulgaria, with 779 additional enrolments in 2024/25 compared with the previous academic year. BTA has signed indefinite agreements for ongoing collaboration with 45 of Bulgaria's 51 universities to provide copyright-cleared materials and student internship opportunities.
