The Association of European Journalists-Bulgaria said on Saturday that a forum dedicated to climate and climate change will be held on October 9, 2025 in partnership with Ratio, aiming to foster informed decisions for protecting health, the environment and resources. The event will include discussions on the risks associated with climate change and the scientific solutions currently in development.

This year’s forum will address climate and climate change, featuring discussions that extend beyond journalism to include scientific perspectives and the everyday effects of climate change. Participants will examine strategies for making informed decisions to protect health, the environment, and natural resources.

Ruth Michaelson, Middle East correspondent for The Observer, will discuss the connections between climate and conflict. The forum will also examine the impact of climate change on extreme weather, public health, and the environment.

The event addresses a critical global issue, presenting recent data from the Germanwatch Climate Risk Index indicating that extreme weather events between 1993 and 2022 caused over 765,000 deaths worldwide and generated financial losses approaching USD 4.2 trillion. Bulgaria is among the most impacted countries in Europe, experiencing record temperatures, severe heatwaves, and significant damage. In 2022, extreme climate conditions led to more than 1,200 deaths in Bulgaria and a substantial increase in heat-related illnesses reported by healthcare providers.

The event is organized in partnership with Climateka and supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the America for Bulgaria Foundation. As in previous years, the program will feature three practical workshops for professional journalists and students.
