The official unveiling of the memorial plaque of Hungarian scientist and foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) Geza Feher took place on Wednesday in front of the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Sofia. The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of Hungary in Bulgaria and BAS.

A speech was delivered by Miklos Boros, Ambassador of Hungary to Bulgaria, followed by an address by Acad. Julian Revalski, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. 

"I am grateful to the Central Library of BAS and to its staff for being our partners during these two years since the process of building the memorial plaque began,” said the director of the Hungarian Cultural Institute Sandra Miskedi.

Geza Feher was born on in 1890 and worked in Bulgaria from 1921 to 1944. He became a member of the Bulgarian Archaeological Society in 1924 and a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1943. He is one of the founders of Proto-Bulgarian studies. His scientific work from the interwar period is devoted to the Proto-Bulgarian culture, deciphering the inscription on the Madara relief and the historical links between the Proto-Bulgarians and the Old Magyars. With his scholarly works, published in Bulgarian, Hungarian, German and French, Geza Feher has made an outstanding contribution to the creation in Europe of widespread public interest in the Proto-Bulgarians.

Ambassador Boros pointed out that the date of the opening is not chosen at random, but comes on the eve of October 19, the Day of Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship.
