The 6th National Space Forum (NaFSKI-VI) started at Sofia Tech Park on Monday. Opening the event, Deputy Innovation and Growth Minister Georgi Angelov said that his Ministry is responsible for space, defence and a range of innovations, including those related to energy.
The event is organized by Branch Cosmos of the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria and the Institute of Astronomy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), under the patronage of the Innovation and Growth Ministry. The forum will run until October 29.
One of the Ministry's main objectives is to encourage the academic community and industry to deliver results in space research.
"At present, a European Space Agency (ESA) programme is open for applications, in which Bulgaria, as a Cooperating State, can take part. The deadline has not expired, there are still at least three to four weeks left for submitting proposals," Angelov said.
Next year a new National Programme for Scientific Research and Innovation will be launched, with the Space sector among its priorities. Projects related to space technologies and research will also be eligible for funding under the programme.
Angelov called on the participants to be more proactive and not to overlook these opportunities. "Bulgaria has already allocated resources within its ESA membership, but interest from the national scientific community remains low. It is possible to apply - there are funds available and open opportunities," Angelov said
Leading Bulgarian technological companies will present their latest achievements in the space industry, while young scientists and doctoral students will showcase the results of their research. Representatives of the European Innovation Council will also take part in the event.
The forum will highlight the achievements of the Copernicus Marine Service. Participants will also receive updates on the space missions of the European and American space agencies, as well as recent observations at the Belogradchik Astronomical Observatory.
