The facades of more than 40 buildings in 27 municipalities across the country will be illuminated in green on Saturday to mark the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency said.
The initiative is a gesture of solidarity with the Council of Europe's campaign to hold the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation, and aims to draw public attention to this important cause. The Day for Organ Donation has been observed since 1996, the Agency added.
One person declared brain dead can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve the lives of up to 100 people through tissue donation, the Medical Supervision agency also stated.
Raising public awareness about organ donation and transplantation is of vital importance in order to give patients waiting for a transplant a second chance at life.
The National Assembly building will also be illuminated in green light, the parliamentary press office announced. The aim is to raise public awareness about the meaning and significance of organ donation and transplantation as a means of saving human lives, the Parliament added.
Among the other buildings in Sofia supporting the initiative are those of the Sofia Municipality, the Vasil Levski National Stadium, the National Palace of Culture, Lozenets Hospital, SofiaMed Hospital, and Pirogov Hospital.
According to the Agency’s website, as of October 3, 875 people in Bulgaria are in need of a transplant. Since the beginning of the year, 20 transplants have been carried out, following nine donor situations.
