The Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office has brought criminal charges against a 22-year-old man who allegedly helped foreigners enter the country illegally and used a vehicle registration number that had been revoked, the prosecution service reported on Friday.

The prosecution alleges that the indicted G. V. assisted 16 foreigners to enter the country illegally through the Lyulin tunnel in Sofia on Wednesday night. The foreigners were being driven in the cargo compartment of a Ford Transit van. The van had a registration plate that had been issued for a different vehicle and was later revoked.

A pre-trial investigation is underway. G. V. has been detained for up to 72 hours. A request will be filed with the court to detain the defendant in custody.
