“I was summoned for questioning by the prosecution over a report from last year related to an inspection by the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water, to provide further clarification,” said the director of the Sofia waste treatment plant, Nikolay Savov, on Thursday, just minutes after exiting the interrogation.

Earlier in the day, the Prosecutor’s Office summoned Savov for questioning, although the reason had not been disclosed, according to a statement from the Sofia Municipality.

Savov stated that he was only asked “clarifying questions” regarding a report from last year. “There were 15 inspections by RIEW. They have now reopened the case concerning one of those inspections,” he added, explaining that his summons had no connection to the current waste crisis in Sofia. “Not a single word or remark was made by the investigator regarding the ongoing situation. I was asked only about details related to a RIEW inspection from last year,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bobcheva is also expected to be questioned by the Prosecutor’s Office on October 10. “As far as I can tell, we received identical summonses, so she should also be questioned on the same matter,” Savov added.
