The European Mobility Week, the European Commission's annual flagship awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility, is taking place on September 16-22, the Environment and Water Ministry said Tuesday. This year's theme, Mobility for Everyone, calls on people to rethink every journey and work towards ensuring mobility for everyone, regardless of income, location, gender or abilities.

"Many people face challenges like high-cost or lack of transport options that limit their access to jobs, education and essential services. In 2025, European Mobility Week invites us to envision and build towards a society where transport services are available, accessible, affordable, inclusive and safe, ensuring that public transport, walking and cycling are fair options for everyone," the campaign's website says.

Ten Bulgarian municipalities have registered on the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK platform this year: Burgas, Sofia, Beloslav, Varna, Gabrovo, Panagyurishte, Plovdiv, Ruse, Strazhitsa and Hisarya. By joining, they gain visibility as part of a Europe-wide initiative widely recognized as a driving force for sustainable urban mobility in Europe and beyond.

Across EU Member States, including Bulgaria, the campaign's main events aim to encourage local authorities to provide sustainable urban travel options, promote new infrastructure and technologies, measure air quality, gather public feedback, and raise awareness among children and youth about road safety and clean air.

In Bulgaria, the Environment and Water Ministry has planned more than 50 initiatives nationwide, involving thousands of children and young people, in partnership with local authorities and NGOs. Activities include outdoor games, exhibitions, concerts, cycling competitions, quizzes, road safety talks and car-free mobility initiatives in more than 15 municipalities.
