A ceremony was held at the Armenian Garden in Sofia on Thursday to commemorate the victims of the genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire against the Armenian people between 1915 and 1917. April 24, 2025, marks 110 years since the beginning of one of the darkest episodes in the crumbling Ottoman Empire.

The ceremony was attended by descendants of the victims and refugees of the persecutions. In memory of their ancestors, they sang songs, poems and gave speeches in their native language. The ceremony was also attended by the National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova, the Ambassador of Armenia to Bulgaria Tsovinar Hambartsumyan, municipal councillor Vili Lilkov.

Kiselova said that April 24 is a sad day not only in the world history, but also in Bulgaria's history. "We remember the extermination of Armenians within the Ottoman Empire," Kiselova said. She added that the fact that the Bulgarian state and its people opened their homes and hearts for the Armenians who were expelled from their homes, should serve as a reminder that there should be no discrimination. "The Bulgarian Armenians who have chosen to stay here are an indispensable part of Bulgarian society, with their contributions in all spheres of public and political life," she said.

The ceremony ended with the laying of flowers and wreaths at the Sofia Khachkar.
