site.btaVP Iotova: It Is Obvious There Was Something Wrong in the Way the Elections Were Conducted
In response to a question from BNT, Vice President Iliana Iotova said it was obvious that there was something wrong in the way the elections were conducted. “The blame cannot be put on the Interior Ministry alone, nor on the Central Election Commission (CEC) alone. Since immediately after the elections there was talk about necessary changes in the Election Code, obviously everyone has seen the shortcomings and it is better to take the lessons and not continue to throw political qualifications at each other,” the Vice President said.
“Something is missing in the work of CEC, they say they do not have enough powers. If CEC is to be solely responsible for organizing and conducting the elections, they should be entrusted with these powers, which they do not have now,” Iotova stressed.
“In recent days, there has been a heavy discussion about whether machine voting is legitimate, where the blame lies - with the election organisers or with the company that provides the machines, blame has also been cast on whoever produced the paper. This creates great distrust in the Bulgarian citizens as voters. Then we wonder why the turnout is low and we rejoice that we have increased it by two percent. We need a careful analysis of what happened, legislative changes if necessary, but all this will not help if we do not change our own mentality and respect ourselves a little more,” she noted, adding that she and President Radev will attend the first sitting of Parliament on November 11.
