In the wake of the devastating floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which claimed the lives of dozens of citizens and caused material damage, the Bulgarian Government is considering the possibility of providing immediate humanitarian assistance, the Foreign Ministry here reported on Sunday, explaining that communication has been ongoing since Friday, October 4, in the first hours after the disaster.

In coordination with the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Sarajevo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Staff are clarifying the specific humanitarian needs of the affected Balkan country. Caretaker Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov requested such information from his Bosnian counterpart.

The Defence Staff is in contact with the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina about the necessary engineering equipment and means to be provided.

A heavy rainstorm swept through Bosnia and Herzegovina during the night between Thursday and Friday, killing dozens and flooding towns and villages in the central and southern parts of the country. Rescue services in the southern part of the country also reported several missing persons and called for volunteers and the army to help, as roads were closed and houses were left without electricity.
