Burgas Free University (BFU) is marking its 33rd anniversary on Wednesday, Burgas Municipality said.

On September 18, 1991, the Grand National Assembly adopted a resolution granting BFU the status of a higher education institution. The university in Burgas was one of the first three private universities in the country. It has laid the foundations for many successful educational practices since its establishment.

BSU was the brainchild of a group of intellectuals and public figures who faced great challenges while putting their idea into practice.

The opening of the first academic year at BFU was a memorable moment, with then Parliament Deputy Chair Ginyo Ganev handing the university’s rector, Prof. Danail Bonchev, the resolution of the Grand National Assembly.

Another milestone in the history of the Black Sea city and Bulgarian education was the opening of the new BFU building on October 31, 2004.

"Burgas Free University has always been a pillar of higher education in our city, offering young people from the region and across the country opportunities for growth and promising career paths. I am confident that the university’s leadership, faculty, and students at Burgas Free University will continue to successfully pursue important projects in science and business, bringing pride to our city," Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said in a letter of congratulations sent to the BFU leadership.
