A forestry employee at the Southwest State Enterprise has been charged with illegal cultivation of cannabis in the Sandanski Region, said on Wednesday the prosecution office in Blagoevgrad.

The 40-year-old employee was first brought in by the Regional Prosecution Office as a defendant for afforestation and cultivation of 300 plants. However, after the interrogation, the man was detained for a period of up to 72 hours.

The Southwest State Enterprise said that the management of the enterprise will request information about the case from the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry in Blagoevgrad, and upon confirmation of what has been reported in the media, strict measures will be taken against the employee in question.

The Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry said that on Tuesday, August 20, police officers of the Sandanski District Administration conducted an inspection in the village of Bozhdovo, during which they discovered five separate fields with about 128 herbaceous plants, which tested positive for cannabis and weighed around 485 kg. A pre-trial proceeding for sowing and growing cannabis plants was initiated in the case.
