site.btaContact Group Discusses Bulgaria’s Participation in Meeting of Envoys, Coordinators Combating Anti-Semitism

Deputy Minister Nevyana Miteva, National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism, called a meeting of the Contact Group on Combating Anti-Semitism on July 11, said the Foreign Ministry on Saturday. The meeting was attended by representatives of state institutions and NGOs involved in the fight against anti-Semitism.

A highlight of the discussions was the participation of the Bulgarian delegation in a meeting of Special Envoys and Coordinators Combatting Anti-Semitism, which will take place in Buenos Aires from July 16 to 18and the implementation of specific measures set out in the National Action Plan on Combatting Anti-Semitism (2023-2027). The meeting also discussed the growing manifestations of anti-Semitism globally following the attack by Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023, the situation in Bulgaria in this context, as well as good practices and tools to advance the prevention, containment and counteraction of anti-Semitic manifestations. Bulgaria's commitment to counteract anti-Semitism and prevent manifestations of discrimination, intolerance and hatred in Bulgarian society was once again reaffirmed, the Foreign Ministry said.

On May 16 Deputy Foreign Minister Nevyana Miteva was appointed as national coordinator for combating anti-Semitism. Under a 2022 Council of Ministers decision, the position of national coordinator was established at the level of deputy foreign minister, appointed by order of the minister of foreign affairs. This ensures continuity and better coordination of efforts to counter anti-Semitism. With the post of National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism Bulgaria also fulfils one of the commitments made at the International High-Level Conference on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Anti-Semitism held in Malmo in 2021.
