The world:

- National Day of the Bahamas: Independence Day (1973).

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1876: Bulgarian Central Charitable Society is established as political organization of Bulgarian emigres in Romania with head office in Bucharest. Society spearheads movement for Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule after suppression of April Uprising of 1876.

1901: Bulgarian Women's Union holds constituent congress (disbanded October 1944).

1966: FM radio relay and television station goes into operation on Botev Peak (2,376 m) in Central Balkan Range, covering more than 65 per cent of Bulgaria's territory.

1969: National Assembly Presidium ratifies Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (signed July 1, 1968, effective March 5, 1970, extended indefinitely, May 11, 1995). In force for Bulgaria as from March 5, 1970.

1980: Diplomatic relations established with Lesotho.

1990: Seventh Grand National Assembly holds first sitting (elected June 17, 1990, dissolved itself October 2, 1991 after adopting new Bulgarian Constitution).
