Since its inception on April 12, 2023, Bulgaria's 49th National Assembly has adopted 148 laws, 286 resolutions and three declarations, the parliamentary Press Centre reported on Monday.

Of the 122 plenary sittings held during that period, 21 were extraordinary.

A total of 359 bills were tabled between April 12, 2023 and April 30, 2024, including 216 by MPs, and 325 of the 410 draft resolutions were also initiated by lawmakers. In addition, nine draft addresses and declarations were moved.

Until April 30, 2024, MPs addressed 2,888 questions and 76 interpellations to members of the executive. Question Time took place at 26 regular plenary sittings and four extraordinary plenary sittings. MPs of all parliamentary groups addressed 74 questions requiring a prompt verbal response during eight Friday sittings.

The legislature used 156 hours and 54 minutes of its time for oversight of the executive. Thirty-one hearings and one discussion on an interpellation were held. Two motions of no confidence against the Government were defeated.

Of the questions asked, 2,277 required a written response and 611 a verbal response. Fifty-two interpellations sought a written response and 24 a verbal response. A total of 2,498 questions and 60 interpellations received responses.

In line with the latest amendments to the Constitution, the legislature was not dissolved in the run-up to the June 9 parliamentary elections but nevertheless took recess on April 27 for the month-long campaign. It may still reconvene for an extraordinary sitting "in exceptional circumstances", as its Rules of Procedure say. The credentials of the 49th National Assembly will be terminated when the newly elected members of the next parliament are sworn in.
