Students from 56 countries applied for the opportunity to spend a summer internship at the Bulgarian Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University. Among the applicants are representatives of leading universities from the USA, Germany, UK, Switzerland, China, India and others. There are also candidates from distant countries such as Nepal, Indonesia, Ethiopia and others, the press centre of the Education and Science Ministry said on Tuesday.
The number of approved candidates is less than 3% or only 23 students, including four Bulgarians. They will have the opportunity to work with researchers from the institute for a period of 8 to 12 weeks, starting in June. This is the second edition of the programme, and the successes INSAIT has achieved over the past year in the fields of artificial intelligence, large language models and computer vision have increased the level of international interest in it.
The shortlisted candidates include gold medal winners from international Olympiads and competitions, and some have already published and presented at prestigious scientific conferences. Among the students, there are those ranked in the top 1% of the most talented children in countries such as Iran, India, China and others.
INSAIT is part of Sofia University, which has a strategic partnership with the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne, and has attracted funding from companies such as the Bulgarian SiteGround, Google, Amazon, VMWare, and a number of representatives of the Bulgarian ecosystem.
About two months ago INSAIT also announced the launch of an unprecedented for Bulgaria internship programme aimed at Bulgarian students, which will provide a scholarship of BGN 2000 per month for Bulgaria's most talented young people.
INSAIT – Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, is the first of its kind in Eastern Europe to offer world-class research facilities and conditions. INSAIT was founded in April 2022, in partnership with Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and EPFL, two of the world’s best technical universities, and is closely advised and supervised by top academics from some of the most elite U.S., European, and Israeli universities and research labs. INSAIT is also generously supported by donations from Google, Amazon Web Services, DeepMind, SiteGround, VMware as well as many tech entrepreneurs. INSAIT’s sole focus is on scientific excellence: conducting world-class research, attracting outstanding international scientists, and training the next-generation of graduate students and technology leaders.
